It's certainly not breaking news that California sets the bar when it comes to the adoption of sustainable and energy-efficient building techniques, and also no surprise that it leads the rest of the US when measuring cumulative solar capacity.
Perhaps, then, it was not a huge shock when last year the California's Building Standards Commission ruled on a first-of-its-kind mandate that would require new construction homes - both single- and multi-family homes, up to three stories tall - to have a solar energy system installed beginning on January 1, 2020. The mandate also helps move the state closer to its ambitious goal of achieving 100% clean electric power by 2045.
Here's a quick and excellent overview of the new mandate, including background and some exceptions to the ruling, from EnergySage.
Cheers to the next year, to a new decade, and to increasing the adoption of clean and renewable energy!
